Announcement: Online Class

Due to the Corona pandemic, lectures and labs in this class take place via Zoom videoconferencing this semester. Students registered via RWTHonline received an email with details how to connect.

This class covers basic research methods and current research trends in Human–Computer Interaction. We use a mix of recent book chapters and papers from conferences and journals of the last few years to give you an idea of how HCI research is conducted, and of the hot topics that are being worked on in the international research community. Examples from past years include interactive surfaces, tangible user interfaces, human computation, gestural input, interactive textiles, augmented reality, and personal fabrication.

The class explains the differences between empirical, ethnographic and systems research in HCI, and how to quickly retrieve and evaluate information from existing literature, a skill you will need for your Master's thesis and future research work in HCI.

The first part of the class consists of weekly lectures, labs, reading assignments and group assignments about HCI research methods. In the second part of this class, the lectures present new topics in HCI research, and the labs are for feedback on your projects and discussions. The class includes graded written midterm and final examinations.

This course has limited seating. You need to register to obtain a seat in this course.

To get a seat in this course, follow these steps before:

  • Register for the course in RWTHonline (registration will be open on March 23, 2020). Only 30 seats are available for this course. Priority is given to Master students in Computer Science, Media Informatics, Software Systems Engineering, and Technical Communication. Registration will stay open until May 29, 2020.
  • Erasmus students can register during the first lab or studio.
  • Sign the Declaration of Compliance and hand it in before 2pm, Wednesday, April 8, 2020. Note: Due to the current pandemic situation, scans or pictures are valid.
