Fablab Tidiness

This page intends to summarize the current state of the Fablab. Most of the machines used in the Fablab and their respective accessories as well as basic tools and parts will be covered. The level of tidiness seen in the pictures should be kept throughout the year. After working on something, tools and parts that are no longer needed should be put back to their respective spot in the Fablab. Unfinished projects should be either kept in their respective project box or your Hiwi box, so all working areas are free of clutter and usable all the time when you are not using them.

You can click on the pictures for a more detailed view

Oilbaths: Used for cleaning off wax residues from printed parts (ProJet).

Ultrasonic cleaner: Used for removing oil residues from printed parts (ProJet) after cleaning them in the Oilbath.

Lab Oven: Used for removal of large wax amounts from printed parts (ProJet).

Project related boxes: On the shelves several boxes contain parts or materials from different projects.

Materials: Plywood, MDF, Plexiglass and Cardboard are mostly used in the Lasercutter. Molding silicone is used for creating molds.

Raise3D Pro2 3D Printer: Mid-level 3D printer with dual extruders and a build volume of 30 x 30 x 30 cm.

Ultimaker S5 Pro: Mid-level 3D printer with dual extruders and automatic material swapping. Build volume 33 x 24 x 30 cm.

Ultimaker 3 Extended: Slightly older mid-level 3D Printer with dual extruders and a build volume of 23 x 19 x 20 cm.

Filament spools: The filament spools are partly sorted. Ultimaker branded filament is only for use in the Ultimaker. Don't use any other filament brand for the Ultimaker printers. Generally filament with 1.75mm diameter is kept in the two bottom rows of the shelves. 3mm diameter filaments should be on the top shelves.

HiWi boxes: In the HiWi boxes you can keep your personal protective gear (eg.: gloves, protective glasses etc.) or unfinished projects you are working on.

Prusa i3 Mk2: Entry-level 3D Printer with a single extruder and a build volume of 25 x 21 x 20 cm.

Roland SRM 20: A CNC milling machine used for soft materials. The Notebook with the machine controller software is located below the workbench (see next picture).

Compressed air gun: Part of the pneumatic system used in the fablab.

Label Printer: Used for creating labels for boxes, tools and everything else that needs labeling.

Lab bench power supplies: Can provide different amounts of voltage and current. Useful for testing circuits or parts.

Oscilloscope: Tektronix MSO2024 Mixed Signal Oscilloscope 16CH   -   User Manual

Machine related boxes: Accessories for some tools or machines used in the lab. Drilling and Dremel accessories, protective gear etc.

Power drill / Dremel: Those tools are used for all drilling or other machining needs. Drill bits and Dremel attachments are found directly on the wall above the workbench.

Ear Protection: Use ear protection when using loud power tools.

Electronic components: A large assortment of electronic parts, from basic components (eg.: resistors, capacitors etc.) to microcontrollers, motors and cables. Check the picture for more detailed descriptions of the drawer contents.

Mixed tools and parts: Screws, washers and nuts in varying sizes are found here, as well as some usefull measuring instruments for electronics. Check the picture for more detailed descriptions of the drawer contents.

Compressor chamber: In this chamber the compressor providing the lab pneumatic with pressure is located. Check the pneumatic page for operation and maintaining information.

Lasercutter: In this picture you see the new lasercutter Epilog Fusion M2 40. The old lasercutter Epilog Zing 6030 is currently not in use and located below a workbench in the first room.

 9 1024 768

Workbenches: In this picture you see the 2 large workbenches located in the second room. These can be used for any work. Please keep them tidy and return all tools and parts to their respective spots when you are done on your projects, so the next person can use the workbench.

Containers for leftovers: Directly below the 2 large workbenches boxes for leftover materials are located. Any leftovers from materials used in the lasercutter like plywood, plexiglass, MDF or cardboard as well as E-waste is collected here. Check those boxes if you only need a small piece of those materials instead of using fresh material.  4 1024 768

Tool trolley: Inside the tool trolley you can find many different basic tools and measuring devices.

Mantis inspection microscope: Vision Engineering Mantis Elite

Soldering work area: In this area you'll find hand soldering stations (hot air and soldering iron), a fume extractor and clamps for holding everything in place.

Soldering accessories: Cables, desoldering pump and wick as well as flux can be found here. On the shelve directly above the soldering work area there are other labeled boxes with soldering accessories as well as a waste container used for waste containing lead.

Reflow soldering oven: Used for soldering SMD components to circuit boards. Maximum pcb size 16 x 20 cm. Maximum temperature 320°C.

Protective gear: In those boxes you find filtering masks, safety goggles and rubber gloves.

Vacuum chamber and pump: Mostly used for venting air from created silicone molds. A short guide on the preparation of silicone for molds shows the basic use of the pump and chamber for venting. The vacuum pump is an oil pump, so please check if there is enough oil in the pump before using it. (placeholder: maybe create a short guide on the pump to showcase here instead of the silicone guide)

PCB milling machine: The LPKF Protomat S104 PCB mill can produce single or double sided pcbs and is only used for this purpose. The machine can also dispense solderpaste with high precision. Do not use this machine for machining materials other than pcbs, for this purpose different machines are available.

Pick and place machine: This machine is used for the manual placement of SMD components on circuit boards. It can also dispense solderpaste but mostly the PCB milling machine is used for dispensing solderpaste as it is more precise.
