Announcement: Self-study Format

Despite Prof. Borchers’ research sabbatical this semester, we decided to offer you the opportunity to take this class for graded credits. It is in a self-study format which will require the same amount of work as usual, and likely a bit more self-discipline to stay on top of the material. We won't offer any labs or assignment gradings. Also, the project won't happen. We will provide lecture videos and assignment sheets from last year for your studies. You only have to write the final exam at the end of the semester. You should still form groups of three to help you stay on track, do the weekly assignments, and come to the office hours with your questions. We will offer a Moodle forum which you can use for discussions with the other students in the course.

This class covers basic research methods and current research trends in Human–Computer Interaction. We use a mix of recent book chapters and papers from conferences and journals of the last few years to give you an idea of how HCI research is conducted, and of the hot topics that are being worked on in the international research community. Examples from past years include interactive surfaces, tangible user interfaces, human computation, gestural input, interactive textiles, augmented reality, and personal fabrication.

The class explains the differences between empirical, ethnographic and systems research in HCI, and how to quickly retrieve and evaluate information from existing literature, a skill you will need for your Master's thesis and future research work in HCI.

The first part of the class consists of weekly lectures about HCI research methods. In the second part of this class, the lectures present new topics in HCI research.

This course has limited seating. You need to register to obtain a seat in this course.
