I was a student assistant and postgraduated research assistant at the media computing group. I joined the insitu lab in Paris, where I work with Wendy Mackay on new tangible interfaces and new interaction paradigms at large public displays. For my PhD I get a grant for 3 years from INRIA - the french national institute for research in computer science and control.

SLAP

I wrote my diploma thesis about SLAP, Silicone Illuminated Active Peripherals, under supervision of Malte Weiss.

SLAP, or Silicone Illuminated Active Peripherals, are translucent tangible widgets, cast from silicone or build from acrylic. SLAP Widgets consists of keyboards, key- pads, sliders, and knobs and are used on vision-based multi-touch tabletops. Multi-touch tables enable user to interact naturally via direct manipulation with the interface. However, interaction with planar surfaces lacks tactile feedback. It gives the user clues or guides the users movements. Thus, they can operate or position their hands without visual attention.

Conventional opaque physical objects lack dynamic relabeling. On the other side, interaction with graphical objects on touch screens lack tactile feedback. SLAP combines the benefits of real world physical objects and dynamic virtual objects. By bridging this gap, SLAP supports eyes-free interaction and input accuracy. Individual marker pattern beneath each widget identify the widget and its identity. Movable parts, such as the slider and knob are also tagged by a marker to indicate their status to the table’s camera.

Since the widgets are translucent the tables rear projection provides the appropriate labeling depending on what virtual object the widget is connected to. An connection of a tangible control to an virtual object has to be established by the user.
