Indirect Touch: An Ergonomic Multitouch Form Factor

What is Indirect Touch?

Indirect Touch is a multitouch system which uses horizontal surface for input and vertical surface for output. This form factor improves ergonomics of multitouch interaction by eliminating the Gorilla Arm problem when interacting with vertical surface, and the stiff neck problem when interacting with horizontal surface for an extended period. Our research focuses on designing and evaluating interaction techniques on this platform that retains the expressiveness of multitouch input while enabling extended use.

Our paper that will appear at CHI 2013 evaluates different methods to switch the state of the cursors, e.g., from hovering to activating and vice versa.
