User Study: Learning Statistics for HCI researchers

Statistics are an important part of HCI research as they are needed to evaluate a developed system. However, Paul Cairns found out in 2007 that HCI researchers struggle with using statistics in an appropriate way. In fact, he investigated 41 papers of HCI conferences and journals finding out that 40 out of 41 papers suffer from statistical mistakes. Therefore, we are currently trying to improve learning statistics for students and researchers, developing an interactive statistics learning system. In order to find out how this complements traditional learning methods, we are conducting a user study in the lecture Current Topics of HCI.

Current Exercise: Attend lecture and fill out test

If you are in group A and attended the lecture: Please fill out the Post-Test online or printed out before the lab on May 28. If you fill out the printed version, please return it to the box in front of the seminar room today or before the lab. You'll find some sweets there ;-)

If you are in group B and attended the lecture: Please fill out the Mid-Test online or printed out before the lab on May 28. If you fill out the printed version, please return it to the box in front of the seminar room today or before the lab. You'll find some sweets there ;-)

If you are in group A and DID NOT attended the lecture: Please watch the whole video of the lecture before you return for the interview. Please fill out the Post-Test directly after watching the video.

If you are in group B and DID NOT attended the lecture: Please watch the whole video of the lecture before you do user study. Please fill out the Mid-Test directly after watching the video.

How do I benefit from participating?

Participating in the user study is voluntary. As an alternative, you opt-in for an optional statistics assignment to receive the score. However, you can benefit from participating:

  • Complete participation in this user study results in 3% of the overall course score.
  • Statistics learning is very difficult as we sincerely hope that participating in the study will help you learning statistics for future papers or the final exam
  • With your feedback you can improve learning statistics for future students
  • You can help a Bachelor's thesis student
  • You'll get cake
