MCP WS 2014/15

Final Projects

Final presentations: 04.02.2015 13:00 in room 2222

We will meet every Wednesday.
First meeting: 15.10.2014 in room 2222 (Ahornstr. 55).

3D-printers, laser cutters, and CNC milling machines will be available for home users in the near future, but the software for them is hard to use. This lab offers you the foundation you need to start operating those machines. You will learn how to program the devices. Your task will be to make digital fabrication easier. Improve the user experience of our 3D-printers and laser cutters and contribute to the open hardware community.

What you will do

In MCP WS ’14, students will design new user interfaces for personal fabrication devices. They will use technologies like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and Processing.

What you will learn

After the course, you will understand the user-centered design cycle, prototyping, and several interaction techniques. You will understand the requirements and constraints of designing for a fabrication device, get to know Arduino and Processing, and will be able to create things in the FabLab.

Preferred student background

DIS1 (Designing Interactive Systems) is a prerequisite or co-requisite (being taken in the same semester) of the course. The project will be evaluated based on usability heuristics presented in DIS1.

C, C++ and Java/Processing programming will give you a big advantage in the project. Nevertheless, we will refresh them for you in class during the semester.

Hint: Mention your background and a link to your portfolio in the free text field in your application for the lab. This will increase the chance of being selected.

Learning room (LP2)

  • 20% assignments + class participation
  • 10% prototypes & documentation
  • 60% final project deliverable
  • 10% final presentation
