Multimodal Media Madness - Winter Semester 2005/2006

Assignment 6 - Manipulating Video, part 1
Due 19.12.2005

Description

The purpose of this assignment is to introduce you to Jitter. Using Jitter, you will build an application that uses both a QuickTime movie and an iSight as video input. The video input will be altered in some form, and saved to disk. Save the audio data as well.

Task

Your assignment for the week is to build a Max/MSP patch that opens or contains a Jitter window showing a video that has been modified with a filter effect. You will need to show two windows (the before 'effect' window and the after 'effect' window). You will also need to easily switch between video inputs, and record the result of your filter effect.

For video input, please use the sample media in the 'patch' directy in the Max/MSP application folder (some examples include 'bball.mov' and 'countdown.mov'). This will reduce the size of your submission.

You may find the following jitter tutorials helpful:

  • 1: Play a QuickTime Movie
  • 21: Working With Live Video and Audio Input
  • 24: QuickTime Effects
  • 19: Recording QuickTime Movies

This assignment is to be completed in groups of 2.

Some ideas for extra credit for this assignment:

  • Combine multiple video effects. Introduce a time delay. (For example)
  • Combine multiple effects and add controls that modify the parameters of each effect.
  • Alter a video effect based on audio input from the iSight.
Submission

Email an archive (.zip) of your assignment to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. before the due date. The subject of your email should be "M3 Assignment 6"; be sure to use this exact subject line as it will be used to filter assignment submissions for grading. Do not submit a patch file that has not been compressed using zip.

Your assignment archive should include all files required to run your patch. Include a short plain text README file that contains:

  • the names and email addresses of all group members
  • instructions on how to use your patch
  • a short description of your design
  • non-obvious things you did (if any)
  • if you did any extra credit work, be sure to tell us what you did

It is strongly recommended that you test your submission before sending it to us. If we cannot figure how to open your submission (strange or non-obvious compression format, no README file) then you will get zero.
Be prepared to discuss your solution in the next lab.
