Designing Interactive Systems, WS 08/09

Course schedule is tentative and subject to change. Links to lecture notes and assignments will be posted as the semester progresses.
Note: You must be registered with the class to download the lecture notes and assignments.

This year, you can also access course materials, time tables and assignment sheets in the DIS1 L2P Lernraum Aachen respectively DIS1 L2P Lernraum Bonn. In case of contradicting information, however, consider this site (the one you are currently looking at) as the reference.

Announcements

  • Feb 5: The Video with the presentations of the final projects is now online. Seeing oneself talking to an audience can be a great help to improve that skill.
  • Jan 30: You might have noticed that the video of the second class was missing up until now. Unfortunately it turned out that the audio in that video was irreparable broken, so we uploaded a video of a class from a previous semester.
  • Jan 28: We provided a sample petri net for a group of 3 radio buttons for better understanding: 3 RadioButton Petri Net.pdf (41.44 KB)
  • Jan 19: You can find links to the different projects at the bottom of this page now.
  • Dec 11: The midterm grades lists are done now and can be found here for Aachen and Bonn
  • Dec 02: There has been an administrative problem in the ZPA and Campus that prevented you from registering for the DIS1 exam! This will be fixed tomorrow so please register for the final exam using your campus office!
  • Nov 04: Due to a collision the Bonn lecture will from now on be in the Rheinsaal.
  • Oct 29: {TAG(tag=>strike)}Due to technical difficulties, today's slides will be available tomorrow at the earliest.{TAG} The video recordings will hopefully be available next week.
  • Oct 22: In the third paragraph "Procedure" the original Version of the assignment sheet reads an S_e (capital S, small subscript e). It should read W_e, the effective width described four paragraphs above. Also note that in the java program, if you miss a target and click not on it but just near it, this measure point is voided and does not appear in the output. This is okay and meant to happen. The following successfully hit targets are measured again.
  • Oct 15: The first assignment is out (see below). Since the Bonn students had no class yet, they do not have to do it.
  • Oct 07: The lecture and lab will take place in room 2U13. For those who don't know: That's in the same building in the basement, just use the stairs near 2010 and you're there.
  • Oct 06: Due to introductory courses in Bonn, the first two lectures were canceled. We will therefore slightly alter the slides for the students from Bonn in the first three or so lectures to summarize and include the first two lectures they missed. The Aachen lectures and slides stay as they are.
  • Sep 23: Please bring a signed copy of the Declaration of Compliance to the first lecture or lab session!
  • Sep 22: Do not forget to register for the course using campus office!
  • Sep 01: Welcome to this year's Designing Interactive Systems course! On this site you can find current information about the course, in case of information contradicting to campus or L2P, this site is right, campus and/or L2P are wrong. ()

Examinations

  • Nov 26: Midterm Exam (cf. announcements)
  • Feb 04: Final Exam (cf. announcements)
Important: Please note the date of the midterm exam and final exam. In the event that you cannot make it on those dates, it is your responsibility to notify us by Nov 16 for the midterm exam and by Jan 24 for the final exam, or you will receive a 5.0 grade.

Grading policy

If you wish to take the course for credit, you must complete all assignments, lab exercises and exams. You will pass (and receive a schein) upon successful completion of the course with a grade. The grade will be calculated as follows:
  • For the 6 Credit version of the course (without project work):
    • 20% - lab exercises, assignments
    • 35% - midterm exam
    • 45% - final exam
  • For the 8 Credit version of the course (with project work):
    • 40% - lab exercises, assignments, project
    • 25% - midterm exam
    • 35% - final exam
Note that you must achieve a cumulative score above 4.0 and pass the final exam to pass the course.

For assignments that are handed in after the due date we will deduct one grading step per 24 hours. Assignments that are handed in after they have been discussed in the lab session will not be graded and automatically receive a 5.0 grade.

Code of Conduct

At the media computing group we have no tolerance for cheating and plagiarism. In short, this means that choosing to hand in any exam, assignment, or seminar paper that violates the terms of the Declaration of Compliance results in failing the course and may result in further consequences (Bachelor- / Masterordnung: §10 (4), DPO97: §8 (4)).

Please bring a signed copy of the Declaration of Compliance to the first lecture or lab session!
