GTA6: Grand Thesis Author 6

As a farewell present for my PhD student and frequent game jam participant René, I shamelessly used Claude to code a retro variant of the eagerly awaited GTA6 with a personal twist for him: Collect as many research publications in HCI (CHI: 500 points, IDC: 200 points, MuC: 100 points) while avoiding hazards like Deceptive Patterns (DP), having to assist DIS lectures, or the dreaded reviewer R2 that rejected your last paper. Each second you survive also gives you 10 points, but things start moving faster each year (=10 seconds) of your PhD, from year 1 to 6. Can you beat the high score?

I had a Sinclair ZX Spectrum as a kid, so for retro cred, this is written in NextBASIC for its modern-day successor, the Sinclair ZX Spectrum Next computer.

For the best game experience with proper transparency and fluid scrolling, download and unzip this archive to your Mac and install it following the included README.TXT:

archive.pngGTA6.zip

It's a MAME installation that boots into a ZX Spectrum Next. If you're on Windows or Linux, see these installation instructions.  Of course, if you have an actual Next, just copy the file /home/GrandThesisAuthor6.bas from the included disk image.

If you just want a quick look, you can try it out online by clicking here or on the image below — but be warned that this online emulator does not do transparency well, it flickers more, and it may not be around forever.

Thank you René for being an amazing PhD student!
