Printing Miniatures

Our Example Miniture is this Space Soldier Figure from Makerworld

We scaled the model down to 48% of its original size to better represent the miniature scale. This model was chosen because of its similarity to popular tabletop miniatures.

Additionally, we separated the model from its base and tilted it 20° backward to make it easier to support during printing.
For supports, we used generic tree supports and the material used was black PLA.

We printed this model using two resolution settings:

  • 0.2 mm nozzle width, 0.06 mm layer height, 5 hours 50 minutes print time
  • 0.4 mm nozzle width, 0.08 mm layer height, 3 hours 40 minutes print time

Support Removal

The supports were removed by cutting the tree branches and snapping them off. The support removal times were as follows:

  • 7 minutes 50 seconds for the 0.2 mm nozzle
  • 1 minute 55 seconds for the 0.4 mm nozzle

The smaller nozzle produced much thinner support structures, which made them stretchier and slightly more difficult to remove. Increasing the support wall count from 2 to 4 might make removal easier.
