Dimension Lye

General Precautions

  • When handling the lye bath and powder, you must wear protective gloves (the thick and long green ones!), a lab coat and eye protection!
  • Open the windows while handling to keep the Lab ventilated!
  • Do not breathe in dust of the powder or mist from the solution!
  • Avoid dust and steam formation!
  • Wash any exposed skin after handling!
  • Make sure to keep your co-workers safe by keeping proper distance!
  • Wash contaminated clothing and gear before reusing it!

Response to Accidents

WEAR PROTECTIVE GEAR IF YOU ARE HELPING DURING AN ACCIDENT!!

  • IF IN EYES:
    • Rinse eyes cautiously (including areas below the eylids) with water for at least 15 minutes. Keep eyes wide open during rinsing Remove contact lenses, if present and easy to do. Do not rub affected area.
    • Immediately call a doctor!
  • IF ON SKIN (or hair):
    • Take off immediately all contaminated clothing.
    • Rinse skin with water and soap / shower.
    • Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
    • Immediatly consult a doctor.
  • IF INHALED:
    • Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing.
    • If not breathing, perform artificial respiration through appropriate equipment (e.g. a respiration mask with a one-way valve). Do not perform mouth to mouth respiration.
    • Immediately call poison center or a doctor.
  • IF SWALLOWED:
    • Rinse mouth
    • Do NOT induce vomiting!
    • Drink a lot of water!
    • Do not administer water to unconsious persons.
    • Immediately call posion center or a doctor.

Silicone

General Precautions

  • Use protective gloves (e.g. the cheap single-use latex gloves that we use in the lab).
  • Wear a lab coat.
  • Avoid skin contact as the substances can irritate the skin.
  • Use of protective glasses is recommended.

Response to Accidents

  • IF IN EYES:
    • Rinse eyes cautiously (including areas below the eylids) with water for at least 15 minutes.
    • If the problem is persistent, consult a doctor.
  • IF ON SKIN (or hair):
    • Take off all contaminated clothing.
    • Rinse skin with water and soap / shower.
    • Wash contaminated clothing before reuse.
    • Consult a doctor if problems persist.
  • IF INHALED:
    • Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing!
    • If breathing is impaired, call a doctor.
  • IF SWALLOWED:
    • Immediately call a doctor.
    • Only induce vomiting if instructed by a doctor.
    • Do not administer anything orally unless instructed by a doctor.

General Precautions

  • Avoid breathing gas/mist/vapours/spray.
  • Avoid any skin or eye contact as that can sensitize your body and cause heavy allergic reactions in the future!!
  • Open the window to provide proper ventilation.
  • Wash skin thoroughly after handling.
  • Wear protective nitrile gloves and not the cheap latex ones.
  • Wear a lab coat and eye protection.

    • Rinse cautiously with water for several minutes. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do. Continue rinsing
    • If the problem is persistent, consult a doctor!
  • IF ON SKIN (or hair):
    • Take off all contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
    • Rinse skin with water and soap / shower.
    • If skin irritation or rush occurs: Get medical advice/attention.
  • IF INHALED:
    • Remove person to fresh air and keep comfortable for breathing.
    • If breathing is impaired, call a doctor.
  • IF SWALLOWED:
    • Immediately call a doctor.
    • Do not induce vomiting.
    • Drink plenty of water.
    • Do not administer water to unconsious persons.

  • IF IN EYES:
    • Rinse cautiously with water for 15 minutes. Also rinse below the eyelids. Remove contact lenses if present and easy to do.
    • Immediatly a doctor. Continue rinsing on the way to the Hospital.
  • IF ON SKIN (or hair):
    • Take off all contaminated clothing and wash before reuse.
    • Rinse skin with water and soap / shower.
    • If skin irritation or rush occurs: Get medical advice/attention.
  • IF INHALED:
  • IF SWALLOWED:
    • If symptoms develop or persist, call a poison center or a doctor.
    • Rinse mouth with water.
    • Do not induce vomiting unless instructed to by a doctor or the poison center.
    • If spontaneous vomiting occurs, place on the left side with head down to prevent aspiration of liquid into the lungs.

General Precautions

  • Aerosol is highly flammable! Keep away from hot surfaces, sparks, open flames and other sources of ignition.
  • Avoid inhalation of steam/aerosol
  • Use only outside or in well ventilated rooms.
  • Wear eye protection and nitrile gloves.
