Using Grammarly to Check Your Writing

These days, there is no reason to bother others with spelling mistakes in your text anymore. Whenever you expect others to read your text, whether you are writing a paper, thesis, proposal, or documentation, it is common courtesy to proofread your writing as you write.

Grammarly is only one of many tools available to do this, but it is a commercial-grade service that works in browser windows and many applications and platforms, and it is available to you for free if you are an ACM SIGCHI member. You will join SIGCHI anyway as soon as you attend your first CHI or similar conference (since it usually reduces the conference fee by more than the SIGCHI member fee), and even without that, SIGCHI membership for students is only $10 a year. (More details on membership benefits.)

  1. Join SIGCHI
  2. Check your SIGCHI email address:
    • Go to MyACM at https://myacm.acm.org/ (if you don't have an ACM account, create one there for free).
    • Log in to your account and click on "Mail Forwarding" in the left menu to figure out your SIGCHI email address.
  3. Sign up for Grammarly by following these instructions:
    https://support.grammarly.com/hc/en-us/articles/115000091651-Sign-up-process-for-Grammarly-for-Education-users
The "access code" for getting the license is "LoveSIGCHI".
Also, be sure to sign up using your sigchi.org email address.
Other email addresses will be blocked from signing up.
