CHI Ranking Germany
The Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI) is the premier international annual conference in the research field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Established in 1982, its acceptance rates for archival publications (CHI Papers and CHI Notes) range from 15 to 25%. Publications at this conference are internationally regarded equal, if not superior to, publications in HCI journals (see our list of ISI-ranked HCI journals), for example in tenure committees. The conference is organized by the non-profit Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), the largest and most influential institutional body for computer science researchers worldwide, and generally acknowledged to fund conferences of the highest standards in computer science. For the ranking below, we searched the official ACM Digital Library database, covering the proceedings (which, unlike the Extended Abstracts, include all and only the archival publication types of Papers and Notes), of all CHI conferences since 2003, and extracted all archival publications (Papers and Notes) that featured at least one author affiliated with an institution in Germany. For 2009, we used the Advance Program sorted by affiliations until the Digital Library is updated to include that year. We used an automated script to extract the information from the ACM Digital Library online database, and for verification went through the final program for each conference manually to catch any omissions, e.g., due to differently spelled institution names or missing country entries.
The list shows all German research institutions with such publications, with those listed first that contributed the most archival publications during the period covered.
The study shows that the Media Computing Group, since founded in 2003, has managed to become the most successful HCI research group in Germany in terms of total archival CHI publications. In fact, our group alone has contributed more such publications than any other university or other institution in Germany in its entirety.
Of course, the absolute numbers are small, and may shift in the years to come, but we are committed to continuing this positive track record to help strengthen RWTH Aachen University's existing status as one of the nine German elite universities acknowledged by the German National Research Foundation (DFG) in their Excellence Initiative.
We welcome your questions, comments, or corrections concerning the ranking; please contact Jonathan Diehl. Of course, I assume the sole responsibility for any remaining mistakes or omissions.
